getting the entry ready for the Border Art Prize
“Lennox – turn of the century?”
Why did I pick this picture to enter the Border Art Prize?
It looks pretty insignificant – ordinary sky, ordinary sea, seemingly no people, a boring street light and an empty bench on some grass, not even a park – things are all pretty ordinary. And I guess it is exactly that composition of ordinary parts that grabbed my eye. In fact it made the scene look somehow “old” – from a different era – like last century – whatever that might mean. It is definitely emotionally laden. I then decided to enhance that feeling of the picture composition by bleaching the colours and vignetting the frame so that it appears to be taken by an “old” camera/lens as well. In its entirety the picture to me has a certain melancholy. The proportions work well and there are lots of golden mean / 2 thirds lines in the picture.
Perhaps you share my emotional response.
